The New Nursery

It's the first week of December as I write this. Our Christmas tree went up yesterday,  Dec. 3rd. Today it is snowing outside,  and we are fortunate to be warm inside watching football.

This is a quiet time of year on the Acre. The berry patch, lillies, daisies, irises, columbine, chicken and hens, and roses are patiently waiting for Spring.

House plants that spent the summer outdoors are safely looking out of windows.

Michelle saved seeds from many of her flowers this year. Soon she will also be placing seed orders for other varieties.

So we are anticipating a very full nursery come spring. We decided to build another greenhouse attached to our house. We call it The Nursery. It will be a comfortable, well lit area that we can heat and enjoy as part of our living space.

The photos show the now empty nursery, and a previous season in the Greenhouse as inspiration.

It seems that each year brings more flowers. And each year we look for more places to grow them.

One day this year we looked at a part of the yard that we had been neglecting for some time. It was a moment of inspiration for us.

We tackled a serious case of messy build up from years of setting things down for just a moment.

After the clean up came the dismantling of a pergola that had seemed like the thing to build at the time. We never got much use out of it. But there it stood for years.

Up went posts, beams and rafters. We leveled dirt, and layed outdoor carpet. New plastic went on the roof and became temporary windows just as our winter weather came in.

Most of our materials were salvaged. We prefer to find a home and purpose for things that others might discard.

For the record, I do not straighten bent, rusty nails to use on our projects any longer.

As late winter turns to early spring, we hope to enjoy a warm space to start our seeds and watch them grow.
