The Bees

We keep bees for bee’s sake.

For us, it’s not about selling honey or even keeping honey for ourselves at the end of the season.

We just think it’s a good thing to have bees around the neighborhood!

Our beekeeping journey started in 2018 when our kids surprised us our first bee supplies. The next spring, we attended a beekeeping class in the valley and won our first hive! In April of that year, we brought home our first bees.

That Christmas, our kids surprised us with another hive! This one was a flow-hive, so we’ve been able to experiment with different ways of caring for the bees, inspecting the hives, and sampling the excess honey.

We’ve expanded to a little bee city, with 4 hives and some pretty happy bees!

Last year, our bees did an interesting thing.

On a hot July day, they decided they needed a bit more room, and they actually split up, and swarmed into a tree behind Bee City.

We wanted to give them plenty of room to thrive, while ensuring they had a safe place to live. So we sprung into action and quickly set them up with another home.

I climbed up and prepared to catch them while Paul reached up to cut the branch they’d swarmed to (we were crossing our fingers hoping we’d get lucky and get the queen on that branch).

Thankfully, the queen came down with the swarm, so we gave them a little time to get acquainted in their new home before moving them back to Bee City.

They happily spent the remainder of their summer in their new hive!
